I've been feeling very nostalgic lately over DS games, and it got me wondering about how so many of the games on the DS were like... kind of weird. Not in a bad way, but the interface of dual screens allowed for a lot of creativity for game developers to play around with and the DS gave way to a lot of experimental and memorable titles that were very unique. I want to get my hands on more weird DS games, so if you have a recommendation please share! I have a couple of my own:
The World Ends With You - anyone who knows me at this point knows this game is in my blood LOL its a half visual novel half action battle RPG most memorable for its difficult dual screen combat that had you control the d-pad and touch screen at the same time and coordinate your movements in both screens. Takes place in Shibuya, Japan and follows an angsty 15 year old named neku as he's thrown in a life or death game and has to play with a partner for a full 7 days to make it out alive. It's hard to discuss it further without spoiling, but it's definitely a standout title among the DS library in general for its story, gameplay, and banger soundtrack that i still listen to on a daily basis. While this game does have a port on switch, I stand by the DS version being the ultimately better experience since the dual screen combat holds narrative significance. But also the switch version is definitely more accessible due to having a simplified battle system [Content warnings: discussions of death and grief]
9 Persons 9 Hours 9 Doors - Fantastic visual novel that focuses on 9 persons being stuck on a boat with 9 hours and needing to find 9 doors to escape a life or death game. Like twewy, it uses the dual screens to its advantage in the narrative but saying how exactly would spoil what i think is one of the coolest twists i've ever experienced in a video game. but that aside, theres a lot to love about 999's mystery and the way it unfolds, plus the characters are very memorable. the bulk of gameplay when it isn't reading is solving a bunch of escape room puzzles, some of which can get pretty tricky but overall i find them fun and they scratch a good itch in my brain. also not really having to do with the game itself but one character got democratically elected as gay on twitter via a poll from the creator which i think is hilarious [Content warnings: child death, blood, and descriptive texts of gore]
Trauma Center: Under the Knife - if you've played ace attorney i think this game is comparable to that except instead of lawyers its doctors. okay well not one to one since this game isn't quite as much a visual novel as aa but its funny how both games protags are Just Some Guy that have some weird superpower that they use exclusively in their professions. Anyways trauma center is a Surgery Simulation Visual Novel where you play as a surgeon. doing surgery. i remember fuck all about the story if im being honest, i think there's some bioterrorism and man made viruses being spread that you have to help treat and each one gets progressively more difficult to tackle or something. The surgery simulation parts are kind of stressful and pretty difficult, and the late game stuff gets so insanely difficult i never actually beat it... okay everything im saying kind of makes it sound like im bashing the game but its really fun i swear. in part because of how bonkers it is, like i think if i remember correctly you use your surgery skills to defuse a bomb at one point. definitely not how that works but hell if it isn't entertaining. [Content warnings: death, suicidal ideation discussion thats kind of not handled very delicately, gore from all the organs bc you do surgery]
Touch Detective - This is a game i got at my gf's recommendation and i understand him better as a person now after i played it. Its extremely funny, charming, and cute, and whimsical. It's a point and click adventure game following a little elementary school girl solving mysteries with her friends, pet mushroom (i think?) and her butler who may or may not be a vampire. the humour is very quirky and sweet, but some aspects of the game are a little unintuitive like this one part where you have to blow up a character like a balloon with no prior explanation or indication that thats what you have to do or that blowing people up like balloons is a thing that is possible at all in universe. nevertheless its a very sweet and funny game and im excited to play the sequel.
Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja - Humorous dungeon crawler that follows a girl named Izuna, once a ninja but now recently fired because her boss decided ninjas are old school and not needed anymore. she then later accidentally makes a bunch of gods angry, and now has to go through a bunch of randomly generated shrines and fight each one to appease them. As a rougelite its got a pretty steep difficulty curve the farther you go along, but ultimately its very enjoyable. It has a sequel that i've been meaning to play, but i never got around to it. Apparently it has some more polished game mechanics, so you could play that instead probably as the story in the first game is pretty light and i dont think its needed to play the other.
Devil Survivor - trauma center is Up There but devil survivor is hands down the most difficult game ive ever played. I never beat this game either. Some parts were difficult to the point of frustration. but man is it cool. devil survivor is a tactical rpg, where you play as a high school student stuck in a quarantine in tokyo that was set in place after demons started pouring into the city from the underworld and killing a bunch of people. There are a lot of moving parts to the gameplay aspects: for one, the actual battles are turn based strategy and can get really tough. enemies can approach you (or the other way around) and attack you, which will in turn summon a new stage for which to battle, but also you have demons on your team that have different skills that can aid you in different ways, like being able to hover over obstacles or move longer distances in a turn, etc etc. Outside of battle, there are multiple story routes depending on which people you decide to interact with during different hours of the day. You are unable to talk to everyone and see every single possible cutscene in a day, so you have to prioritize which people's arcs you want to see unfold. Depending on your actions, characters can permadie, abandon you, or you can become king of the underworld. either way its a rough ride to Any ending, each final boss is vastly difficult and will require a lot of strategy to pull off. Definitely not a type of game suited for everyone, but if you like tough challenges this one's great. also has a sequel that i never played but i really should. the artist of both games is the character designer for the anime durarara and celty + shizuo + izaya are summonable allies in the second games dlc. i need that [Content warnings: onscreen death + shootings]
Those are just a few of my favourite Weird ds games, but as i said i'm open to hear any suggestions to expand my ds library! I'm cool with any genre :)
