HELLO EVERYONE Do you play trading card games? If so, what are your favorites? What's the card that you are proudest/happiest to have obtained? What's your favorite play style, deck, etc.? I REALLY love trading cards, so I can't wait to talk to you all about them!

I'll go first!
My favorite card game is Magic: the Gathering, of which I am a level 1 tournament judge! I also really enjoy flesh and blood, though I don't have many people to play it with locally..... My favorite formats of Magic are Commander(a 4-player, 100-card singleton format, where you have a card that is your general whom you have access to at all times) and Modern (a 2-player, 60-card, 4-of format, where cards that have been printed in standard magic sets as well as "modern horizons" sets from Magic's Eight Edition Core Set). I'm generally seen as the sort of player who maybe puts a little bit too much effort (and money ) into the game. I've won several sealed events and smaller tournaments over the years, but never anything huge! Some of my favorite cards are: Tasigur, The Golden Fang, Aluren, and Force of Will, and I have a page where I post decks that I've built! The cards that I am the happiest/most shocked to own are called Mox Diamond and Lion's Eye diamond, both of which regularly go for $500+ USD ... I really like to play fast "combo" decks, anywhere between decks where I just win out of nowhere, to decks where I set up a compounding pile that wears my opponent(s) down by making gigantic robots! I can't wait to hear from all of you about your Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic, or other trading card game days! Until then, I leave you with some images of the cards that I love! TURTLE OUT!

HI NICO CARDS
I used to play Pokémon cards at a comic store. I won a badge with it at a local competition and some cards including a shiny espeon. I mostly went to trade/fight Pokémon in the games though, but it was just kind of an adjacent hangout kind of thing? I don't even think I could still play if you gave me a deck LMAO.
I got my first DS stolen in that same comic store basement though :( and then I recovered it (the exact same DS) from the local secondhand game shop. And then both the game shop and the comic shop eventually were shut down and now there's a gold trading service where the comic shop used to be.

I don't really play trading card games but my brother has been trying really really REALLY hard to get me into magic the gathering. he explained the rules to me once and it all flew over my head. he also made me download mtg arena on my compuner and played the first few levels to get a feel for the gameplay and has been getting me arena codes for new cards in-game whenever he visits his local card shop and i haven't entered any of them. i feel a little bit bad bc he Really wants me to play and keeps getting me more codes but im just kind of lazy and dont really want to do it

I can't believe that they let theft run so rampantly and so blatantly, but I'm glad to hear that they aren't doing business anymore! I think the pokemon TCG is supposed to be very simple to learn, but I've never played. I might try out their online game at some point though just to get a feel for it!!!
I think your brother sounds a little pushy, no offense! Magic can be a really challenging game to get into, but even moreso than that if the person really doesn't want to be into it. The codes unlock booster packs in the game so they are helpful for building a collection, but if he really wanted to get you into the game it would probably be better done by sitting down with you on your terms and casually teaching you to play with some..... less convoluted decks than what he tends to play with! But, it really needs to be something you initiate, not just him really wanting you to like the game he does, I've learned that doesn't really work the hard way!

I think it might just be something about MtG players? I wouldn't say they're always pushy about it or something like that, but I see them at like conventions and nerd meets and in game stores and they always really want you to join them. Like, sometimes they'll be playing with each other obviously, and invite you to watch or try, but often they're just like... sitting at a table or a stand, specifically waiting to be able to explain someone how to play. I don't think I've ever seen anyone do that for any other kind of card game. Like there's loads of people who play the Pokémon TCG, and they're friendly and inviting too when they play, but they don't seem to like... go places or bring cards for the specific purpose of trying to teach strangers how to play.

Magic players do tend to have much more of a passion for the game and introducing new people to it than most games in my experience! In some parts I think it's due to them being among the most socially oriented people in nerd spaces, but also because they want to show off how good they are at the most complicated game in the world by playing a deck that goes through 20-step loops that win them the game before their opponent has even had a chance to do anything! Especially len's brother plays the most complicated format of the game, and his decks are top tier in that, so it must be very intimidating for someone without experience.
