Hi! I'm going through it and listening to a ton of vocaloid songs lately and would like to Expand my librarby. Who are some of your favourite vocaloid artists and why do you like them? Or, if you listen to vocaloid but don't know any specific artists, what are some of your favourite songs? I'd love to hear them! I'll start with a small handful of my own recommendations + embed my favourite songs from them There are quite a few artists that i really like but haven't uploaded anything in a long time or quit using vocaloid entirely, so i specifically focused on vocaloid artists that are consistently releasing new music. Feel free to recommend any artist you like though regardless of how active they are. (note: technically vocaloid refers to a software made by a specific company, because those products are the only ones that are officially called vocaloids, but im using vocaloid as an umbrella term for all vocal synth software. for example technically speaking gumi isn't a vocaloid since shes made by a different company but whatever. semantics.)
The Vampire feat. Hatsune Miku I love the chorus of this one
deco*27 is a very longstanding artist in the vocaloid community; if you had a vocaloid phase when you were younger you've probably heard their songs Mozaik Role and Cowardly Montblanc before (both sung by Gumi). In fact, very recently he released a remade version of Mozaik Role with improved tuning, tighter instrumentals, and a new verse thats not in the old version! He uses Miku for it instead of Gumi which is a bit of a bummer but its a really good remaster. These days he only uses Miku to make his songs, but everything he puts out is a banger. Majority of his songs are kind of a mix of rock and pop, he likes using guitars a lot and makes a lot of catchy tunes. As of writing this post, his most recent song is Salamander which released within the first week of this month as part of a collab with the Nissan Cup Noodle brand to make songs related to their cup noodle flavours which is. pretty out there but i guess anything goes with vocaloid LOL
キミを探す/kimi wo sagasu (with RANA) is my favourite long distance lesbian song.
vocacircus (also known as Circus-P) is another artist that's been doing vocaloid songs for a long time. Most of his songs fall into the EDM/electro/pop genre and a few of his songs are in Japanese (like the one above) but for the most part he does songs using english vocaloid voicebanks and his tuning for them is amazing. Some of his english songs sound a little bit janky, but that's mostly due to using old vocaloids that were originally released in japanese and then were modified to have english voicebanks released later (notably miku, kaito, luka etc.) but he still makes them sound great all things considered. His tuning talent really shines when using newer and more up to date software with less jank to it, like in this song Dawn that released 2 weeks ago to promote a new software named SOLARIA that released just a couple days ago. Like listen to that. That does Not sound like a vocaloid anymore thats just a human person. Also, circus sometimes does self-covers for his own songs! His voice is very pleasant and nice to listen to. Here is his cover for the song in the embed. His latest song Puzzle released just a few days ago and features miku and a cute music video.
EYE feat. GUMI the grip this song has on me is unreal
kanaria is a very new artist in the scene, only showing up about a year and a half ago and having kind of a baffling amount of rising popularity and success super quickly. Their most popular song KING is only the second song on their channel and it fucking exploded out of nowhere. Literally everyone and their grandma caught wind of that song and did a cover on it. there have been so many covers of this song its insane. Their rapid rise to popularity caught the attention of a popular producer named MARETU and they did a collab for kanaria's third song, which upped their popularity even more. KING now has almost 50 million views 1.5 years after it dropped. insane. They were only 17 when they started their channel (they have since turned 18) and already released an album and participating in official vocaloid collabs with companies that kid is Going places. Their most recent song Identity is part of the same Nissan Cup Noodle collab that deco*27 was also commissioned for, but unlike deco*27's song which is obviously about cup noodles this song doesnt really have anything to do with noodles so im a bit confused about the nature of that collab in general kanaria uses miku and gumi for the most part in their songs, though interestingly they use gumi's english voicebank to make their (japanese) songs which is a baffling decision to me, but it does give her voice a unique quality to it. Their songs vary pretty widely in their overall sound, but roughly fit within. Some sort of rock genre.
Nightmare feat. flower Ruler ! Ruler ! Ruler !
azari is also a very new artist with quickly rising popularity, not quite as much as kanaria but they dropped their first song just half a year ago and it has about 4 mil views. Currently they only have three songs under their belt, but theyre all really catchy and their latest song Nightmare (the one embedded above) released like. literally 3 days ago as of writing this post. Their other two songs are Shadow Shadow, and their debut song, Casino. So far all their songs use the vocaloid flower, who notably has a bit of a rough/raspy quality to her voicebank but i quite like it. Im not sure how to describe how their music sounds, its kind of... EDM electro swing-y? Whatever it is it sounds neat LOL. Also id be remiss not to bring up this fantastic english cover of Shadow Shadow by Will Stetson, if flower's voice doesn't appeal to you then listening to irl ppl cover azaris songs is a delight in and of itself since the instrumentals slap either way (also i literally just found this out while looking at their twitter but theyre only 17 years old??? and they recently turned 17 too in the past couple of months so they posted their first song while they were only 16??? and i thought kanaria was wild)
ヴィラン/Villain feat. flower CW:homophobia/transphobia in lyrics (not super extreme, song is uplifting overall)
I only very recently discovered teniwoha and don't know much about him. I found him through one song and only know that one song by him so far but i really like that song so i want to talk about it a little bit. Villain is a Bop and uses flower for its voice, like azari's songs. It's incredibly obvious from reading the lyrics of the song that its a Trans Gener song but what i find neat about it is how a lot of people argue in the comments over whether the song is from the pov of a trans man or a trans woman. There's good evidence going for either direction of interpretation both from the lyrics themselves and the visuals of the music video (which has some really nice art i might add) but either way i see a lot of trans people resonating with it in the comments regardless of gender which i imagine was teniwoha's intention. Also i think its neat how the song's title (ヴィラン) is heavily warped and stylized when shown in the music video so that it looks like the english word "girl." pretty cool. I also recommend this cover of Villain both because the singing for it sounds really good and also the lyrics in the closed caption give a more detailed translation than the CCs of the official upload. teniwoha seems to have a lot of music under his belt and is still pumping out more, so i definitely want to check out more of his songs in the near future.
That's all from me, but I want to hear from you! Share some of your favourite vocaloid artists and/or songs and what you like about them :) And if you listened to any of the songs I linked here, I want to hear what you think of them! Even if you disliked them. I want to hear people's opinions
