again, this is nico!
Hello again Nico!
As promised, I have made (and eaten) chili pepper-cinnamon french toast. I have not been sent to jail so far, but I can't say conclusively if it has made me invulnerable to prison time. I have never been sent to jail before either, so even if I was invulnerable to prison time now, I wouldn't know if it was because of the chili pepper-cinnamon toast or because of other factors.
As follows is my documentation:
Ingredients: white bread, cream, egg, chili oil, dried chili pepper, ginger in syrup, cinnamon, butter, brown sugar.
We are out of milk, so I prepared this with (unsweetened) cream. I figured cinnamon would be better on sweet than savory french toast, so I opted for complimentary sweet ingredients like sugar and ginger syrup. The chili oil is rice oil based, and made by my mom.
Process:
1. Ingredients were combined in a plate.
One egg, some cream, approx. 1 teaspoon of chili oil with pulp, one teaspoon of brown sugar, one teaspoon of ginger syrup (not the ginger itself), a pretty generous amount of cinnamon, and about half a dried pepper shredded in there.
I used less sugar than I normally would for french toast, since I thought it wouldn't be good with the other ingredients if it was too sweet. The ginger syrup was to harmonize the taste of chili with the other sweet ingredients. Because I wasn't sure if I could get the spice of the pepper mixed through properly, I added the chili oil besides the dried pepper - I was worried I was going to get like two super spicy bites and then a really mild french toast otherwise.
2. After combining ingredients, they were stirred thoroughly with a spoon.
Structure became very thick. At this point I tasted the mixture and decided that the ingredients I added by eye were balanced. You should probably not do this, because consuming raw egg may cause you to contract salmonella.
3. Butter was melted in a pan.
4. Once butter and pan were hot, a slice of white bread was dipped in the mixture. I made sure to cover it on all sides.
5. The wet bread was fried until brown on both sides in the pan, then taken out and placed on a plate.
6. Steps 4 - 5 were repeated for the other slice of bread.
This pretty much exactly used up the mixture.
Findings:
Me and a second subject, my housemate astraldreams , ate the finished product. It was served with butter and more cinnamon, and one slice had apple spread put on it. Unfortunately, the apple spread expired in 2012, and has since then become so thick that it was nearly impossible to apply to the soft bread, resulting in me struggling to do so for approximately 10 minutes, before deciding it wasn't worth applying to the second slice.
The french toast tasted good! The chili pepper was pretty strong, and most present in aftertaste. The spicy flavor did not seem to clash with the sweetness of the other ingredients, and in fact, the sweet apple spread I spent 10 minutes trying to apply greatly enhanced the overal harmony of the flavors, though the slice without apple spread was perfectly good by itself, too. Despite peppering a large amount of cinnamon into the product, both before mixing and after frying, the cinnamon was not overwhelming; in fact, the other subject declared that he could not taste it. I do think that more would not have been in favor of the finished product, though. Either way, both of us enjoyed it.
Afterwards, we cleaned up the leftover ingredients. It does not seem that anyone has come to our apartment to arrest us following the preparation or consumption of the chili pepper-cinnamon french toast.
That concludes my test. Thank you very much for reading!
With Kind Regards
Avery
