What's everyone favourite recipe to cook when theyre low on energy, ingredients, and/or both? I like to cook and find myself gravitating towards recipes that take a lot of time to make but its not always practical, and I'd like to add more recipes into my little brain that are just as tasty with half the time and effort :)
One that I like to default to when I'm really lazy is a bowl of rice with scrambled egg mixed + fish floss mixed in (or pork floss if we don't have fish floss) and a tiny bit of oyster sauce. The fish floss adds a nice texture and slightly sweet flavour to balance out the egg and rice Although. I don't know how many people actually have fish/pork floss in their cabinets on average hehe. It's a common thing we always buy in my own household but I'm not sure for others.
Another one is an egg drop soup. I like to make a fancy version of egg drop soup with sauteed onions + tomatoes + garlic + ginger + tofu but really almost any thin/watery soup can be made into an egg drop soup. you just have to drop the egg in the soup and it becomes an egg drop. The fastest version is just boiling some water with a soup flavour packet (or broth/stock if you have it) adding some sliced green onions, thickening the soup with a cornstarch slurry, then dropping the egg and youre done. The way to get the best texture in an egg drop soup is to beat the egg beforehand, then pour it in the pot slowly while mixing the soup quickly (its best to do this off heat too, just make sure the soup is actually hot/was boiling beforehand). I like to add a touch of sesame oil right at the very end for a nutty flavour and nice scent.

I like to do a bit of fried cheese pasta :3 You only really need pasta and cheese, but if you have onions, garlic, or bacon definitely add them as well. Any kind of pasta works for this, but I prefer spirelli or short linguini 'cause they take on the flavour nicely. Fry up your bacon, onions, and garlic (+other things you'd wanna add! It's pretty versatile, but I've only ever done those) while you cook your pasta, then add it all in a pan together. While stirring, add grated cheese to taste (and, if you're struggling to evenly melt the cheese, a bit of milk for it to dissolve into), and seasoning (depending on how strong your bacon and cheese taste, just some pepper can be enough, but add other things if you'd like! Be careful with salt, though), then leave it frying for a while, stir, leave it for a while again, etc. That last step really just decides how crunchy you want the pasta to be (I like it not super crunchy myself). It's easy to make pasta and only takes 15-20 minutes (depending on how long the pasta has to boil for), but it's very fun and tasty!
For another food, I also like to buy some Tikka Masala in a jar from the store, then cook some potatos (optional), fry up whatever veggies/meat I have, and just mix it all together. You can add rice, but isn't necessary IMO, it works well on its own or with some bread (both proper naan and just toast is great). Not fully homecooked, and you might need to try a few different brands of jars before you find one you really like, but one of my most recent favourites!
Edit: One more, this one objectively kinda sucks but is great. Needs a jar of some kinda sweet tomato sauce (generally ones aimed at kids are great), can of sweetcorn, can of kidneybeans, some mozzarella. Cut mozzarella, throw it all in a pot together and heat. Boom, done.

LOVE sesame oil The easiest, fastest "cooked" meal I go for is a jacket potato. I just eat it with butter, a tin of beans and cheese (plus salad if I want to play at being a proper grown-up), but you can get snazzier with it lol Enchiladas, rice in general tho I'm partial to jollof rice, and soups can make multiple portions without too much effort, but can take a while to cook. My boyfriend is obsessed with this soup rn and we eat it with grated cheese on top and homemade garlic croutons, but I remain a leek and potato loyalist. And ramen w/ tofu, spring onions, veg, spam, the whole kitchen is your oyster.......

I love to eat food and I hate to stand up, so all my meals are struggle meals LMAO. Here are some of my personal favorites: - French Toast -Always feels like a treat, but only takes about as much work to prepare as a grilled cheese. Also very much a food you can fancy up however you want depending on what's left in your cabinets. Grilled cheese too for that matter - you can put literally anything in a grilled cheese - but this isn't about that.
Min ingredients: 2 eggs, milk, sugar or syrup, butter or oil, 4 slices of bread
- crack two eggs in a deep plate or wide bowl, and add in a bit of milk by eye.
actual milk-egg ratio doesn't matter that much so don't worry about it.
- add brown sugar (by preference), or white sugar, or sweet syrup.
- add cinnamon (optional), or whatever else you'd want for flavor.
you could probably make fucked up spicy french toast with chili pepper instead.
- stir all your ingredients together.
- dip in one slice of bread, both sides.
don't leave it in there for too long or it becomes too soggy to take out.
- melt butter (preferred) in pan or heat oil. Put in wet bread.
fry on both sides until nice and brown.
- dip and fry each slice of bread individually until you run out of mixture.
DONT put your mixture leftovers in the pan and make a fucked up sweet omelette. I tried that and it's nasty and gross.
- serve your french toast with powdered sugar, syrup, whipped cream, melted butter, fruit, ice cream, more cinnamon, any combination thereof, or as-is.
- "soup" -As you know, anything can go into a "soup", so "soup" is perfect for using up leftovers or loose ingredients that need to be used up before they expire. I eat a lot of stir-fry because it's easy to make (you take ingredients, you put them in a pan, and stir-fry them), so those often are my leftovers, and I sometimes make them into low-effort "soup". Min ingredients: nearly anything, water
- boil water. Like with an electric kettle.
- put ingredients in a pan, or leave them in the weird leftovers bowl you found them in.
stir-fried veggies/onion, fried bacon, fish or boiled potato are all good ingredients. add as much or as little as you want and have.
- pour boiling water on it and stir.
you have now created "soup".
- if your "soup" is bland, add a bit of powder soup base, chili, ginger, or something like oyster sauce.
- Breakfast Cereal - The dinner of kings, when their royal cooks are busy revolting and demanding their heads. Min ingredients: cereal, milk if you love yourself
- first, pour the milk in a bowl.
this is a crucial step that ensures you really have milk before you whip out those cornflakes. it also helps keep your cereal from getting as soggy.
- second, put in cereal.
- get groceries at earliest convenience.

this is so messed up and evil and the joker and scary. i understand pouring milk first to make sure you have it. but pouring it before cereal? its like 1984 for real /j

if not for your warning i would have probably tried to make a fucked up sweet omelette with leftover french toast mixture for science. also if you add rice to the "soup" recipe and boil it down thats pretty much how i like to make congee! probably takes a little bit longer than "soup" but its very filling and can be super hearty if u add a lot of veggies :)

Sometimes I will fry onions in butter and drop it into some rice. It's strong and almost feels like a meal.
I'm trying to think of something lower effort than that, I've definitely made meals with less energy, hm...
When we were young, my mom would take a piece of bread, spread a little butter on it, put a slice of cheese on that, and microwave it for a little bit until the cheese melted. Then she'd put some parmesan cheese on top. We called it "open-faced grilled cheese sandwich." It wasn't really super great, but as a kid we could make it for ourselves without using fire unattended, and pretty cheap. It might still be someone's thing, and if you have bacon or shredded chicken or something, it's not that bad an idea when you don't have the drive to do much.

Man, egg in a hole is a good, easy meal like. I can't fry an egg on its own but I can do it if there's a hole involved
Eggsy's Handy Dandy 5 Step Plan: Egg in a Hole Edition
INGREDIENCE: one slice of bread one egg some butter
Step 1: take your slice of bread and tear out the middle. Then you have a snack to eat while the main thing cooks :] Step 2: either butter your bread-crust-ring directly or melt some butter in the pan and stick the bread into the melted butter. Either way butter on bread, in the pan Step 3: let it cook slightly as you crack open the egg into the bread hole Step 4: cook the egg until the whites start to turn white, then flip him over and let him cook the rest of the way to your desired yolk texture (I like mine runny) Step 5: scoop that bad boy out of the pan and onto your plate (or don't, I'm not a cop) and enjoy! :]

I love coming up with struggle meals!
I don't have a name for it, but here's one I like to make when I have low energy and minimal groceries: Add rice, dried lentils, potatoes and curry of choice to an instant pot or regular pot. I like to use some crumbled up curry roux. Cover with water. Cook until rice and lentils are done. Add anything else you think it needs at the end. I sometimes add a spoonful of greek yoghurt.
Another instant pot/one pot pantry meal that I like to make: Add Rice, chicken stock in any format (Block, powered, Liquid, condensed), Frozen broccoli and cauliflower and some sesame oil into a pot. Cook until rice is done. Add cheese and serve.

Hello Nico!
Thank you for your question. You will not be sent to jail if you put both cinnamon and chili pepper in french toast. Or at the very least not because of putting cinnamon and chili pepper in your french toast - it will not make you invulnerable to prison time. However certain I am of this though, I have not tried this! So I will report back to you with my findings once I have.
With Kind Regards, Avery
