I recently started playing Spiritfarer (on the Switch) after seeing lots of people give it very high praise. I'm not finished with it yet, but I'm over halfway the quests now and have maybe about 25 - 30 hours in.
I don't dislike the game, but I'm starting to get a bit bored with playing it! The way people were talking about it made it sound like it was very story-driven and dialogue-heavy - almost like a VN - but it's really mostly resource management with a brief few snippets of story dialogue inbetween, and otherwise the characters all just say the same things over and over. And this might be more personal taste, but the actual dialogue isn't all that interesting or well-written, either. Lots of clunky phrasing, missing punctuation, and, how do I put it... lack of voice? Every character has their own story, personality, and their own hardships, but it largely feels as though they nearly all share the same style of speech, to me. It might partially be that they don't actually have all that much dialogue to differentiate them.
And don't get me wrong - I really enjoy resource management as a genre, so it's not that. But I definitely feel like this game would have been a lot more engaging and a lot more interesting if it had any other kind of gameplay than the one it does. Something that allowed for bigger text boxes, for one, probably actual cutscenes (not even fancy graphic ones, just ones that pause the game to allow you to watch some character interaction) for another. The gameplay as is makes story progression feel slow, to the point of being disruptive - with so much time and management inbetween each quest, for only a scrap of dialogue, I have a hard time staying invested with where the quests actually go, even though I enjoy the characters' narratives in theory.
So... if you've played Spiritfarer, what were your thoughts? Did you have similar experiences, or did those things not bother you at all? Especially if you're one of the people who really enjoyed it, I'm curious what about it you really liked!
Personally, my favorite part is the fishing minigame. The music is really lovely, too.

I haven't played spiritfarer myself but i was thinking about getting it, so i'm interested in hearing other people's thoughts too... it looked appealing from the trailers but after hearing more about your experience i'm a little bit hesitant about it now

Alternatively, you could look up a lets-play to see how you feel about its gameplay, or you could just borrow my copy once I'm done with it (since I have it on cartridge). I don't plan on replaying it in any near future if ever, so I don't really care when I get it back. One thing I will say is that it's probably better played on a big screen. It has very nice artwork and animations, and also you can carely see them on the screen of a normal switch LMAO. Text and text bubbles are really small too, IMO - not sure if that'll be better or worse on a TV. I'd try it, but I don't have a setup in my apartment yet.

Personally, I went into the game hoping for a fun resource management game with a nice story and that's what I got so I'm really happy! Honestly, it's even one of my favourite types of this game! But yeah, if you went with it hoping for a VN experience I can understand why it's disappointing. I was very touched by the stories, and think the game has interesting things to say about death that has helped me through some of my own personal problems! So yeah, that's my two cents on that.
