hello all!
I love indie games and I love talking about them. I'm always looking for new recommendations and I love hearing people talk about their favorite games. So I'm going to start rambling about some recent indie games I like to get the ball rolling ^_^
Get in the Car, Loser! - self-described "Lesbian Road Trip RPG" in which the protagonists, all LGBT, go on a gay road trip to defeat the Machine Devil. I really liked the unique rhythm/timing-based battle system, but it takes a little getting used to. and the soundtrack absolutely SLAPS.... please at least listen to 'Spirit of the Times', the main battle theme. I'll wait here while you do that. Be warned that the game tackles heavy themes like bigotry and injustice, but it also has great humor and a lot of heart. If you love Christine Love's (no pun intended) previous work, you will adore this.
Oneshot - Oneshot is a puzzle/adventure game in which you help a little cat-person restore the sun to the world. The gimmick: the game is very self-aware and 'knows you exist', as in the characters speak to you personally, the player behind the screen, and there are some meta puzzles as well. If unreality is a trigger, this might be one to read more about before trying it. However, this game is not a horror game and has a very whimsical atmosphere, and I recommend it highly!! If you like Undertale, this is a great game to check out.
Ikenfell - Ikenfell is a turn-based tactical RPG with timing elements, puzzles, and another all-LGBT cast!! You're exploring the eponymous magic school, Ikenfell, trying to find your sister and discover what's causing all magic to go haywire. I think the timing mechanics are fun, but they can be a little difficult, but I love the characters and the pixel graphics.
Bug Fables - I was going to leave this list at 3 (a very cool number) but then I realized I could NOT end the thread without talking about Bug Fables. Easily one of my top 5 games of all time. Bug Fables is a cute RPG adventure game inspired by the early Paper Mario games in which you control a team of bugs in a world of bugs. It takes heavily after Paper Mario, with 2D paper-like graphics, timing mechanics for attacks, 'medals' you can equip which grant special abilities, and a whole lot of charm. I wanted to type a whole essay about this game but my brain is frying with how much I love it. If you only have time for one game on this list and you like RPGs, please try Bug Fables.
ok I'm going to stop myself here! please tell me about your favorite indie games and chat about the ones here if you have played them

Ooh, all of those sound very good!! I've been hungry for more indie games to play, but I have so much left on my backlog to play first... Some (semi-)recent ones I've played that I'd recommend are: - Unpacking: a very sweet, although somewhat short game in which you unpack boxes into different rooms and apartments. I was expecting it to be more of like, a general relaxing puzzle game, but it actually has a whole narrative that it tells through environmental storytelling and even it's gameplay. I played it with my housemate, astraldreams , who was like, honking and crying by the credits roll. I won't spoil anything, but I'll just say I was pleasantly surprised by where it went.
- West of Loathing: an RPG based on the MMORPG Kingdom of Loathing. The stick puppet artstyle may not really do much to sell it, but it's genuinely one of the funniest games I've played in the last year or so, up there only with Deltarune. It's not that deep, and it doesn't have some kind of mind-blowing story or whatever, but it doesn't need any of that because it's hilarious and also fun to play.
- Framed: is another short puzzle game - honestly, it's so short I'm not sure I'd buy it at full price - but I love its aesthetic. Enough that I'd recommend it for that alone. LMAO. In this game you flip and play with comic panels, to help the characters in it escape without dying in absurd ways. I wish it was a little more challenging, but I still really liked its concept.
I played all of these on the switch, but I'm pretty sure they can all be played on PC too!

Some of my favorites are Night In The Woods, a game about being gay and doing crimes, and the lost phone series, where you find a cell phone and go through it to try and help return it to the owner. I'm not familiar with a lot of Indie games, so I'm excited to learn more through this thread!

leans in very close. presses lips to the mic. Hollow Knight
i will Never miss an opportunity to go apeshit about hollow knight bc its like. one of The Most Games Ever. its a metroidvania (action platformer where your progress through a massive interconnected world map is helped by obtaining various abilities and movement upgrades from different parts of the world) with a very soulsborne aesthetic; a grim and melancholy story and setting, with the plot focusing on a once-prosperous subterranean kingdom of sapient insects now crumbling under the weight of an ancient plague sweeping over it. it's VERY difficult, especially when it comes to the many many Many boss fights, but super rewarding once you do manage to push past the challenges and unlock more of the story and explore the setting!! the worldbuilding in it is masterfully crafted and creative, has tons of lore (most of which isn't usually stated explicitly but left for you to piece together from npc dialogue and lore tablets and the environment around you), and its also one of THE most immersive games i've ever played with super nice controls, satisfying movement, absolutely INCREDIBLE sound design and music, and it's just overall a blast!! CANNOT recommend it enough, it's such an absolute treat of a game with tons of content for a super affordable price considering just how huge the game is!!!
i havent played bug fables but it seems rlly cute, and considering how much you like it i think youd get a kick out of hk as well!! its. definitely got very different vibes but FMNGBFDFNJ theres bugs and theyre Good. easily up there among my top 5 favorite games also

I'm a big fan of both these games. I never got to play Unpacking, but it's so up my alley. I'll buy it some day.
And West of Loathing is a deceptively huge game with so much going for it. I haven't finished yet, but it's humorous and challenging and has so many secrets that I started to keep the wiki page up to learn about the alternate solutions I could have taken to solve different problems. It's chaotic and charming. It has the feeling of Newgrounds nostalgia without like, the fear of the kind of bigotry I might come to expect if I dip back into that stuff.
I enjoyed this game called Before Your Eyes, in which you relive the story of a young kid's life as you're escorted across a river for judgment in the afterlife. As the title says, it's not only played in first-person, but all actions in the game are implemented by when you blink. The longer you keep them open, the longer you stay in the moment, and once you blink, life moves on to a new time in your life.
It deserves fair warning for death, and some tense conflicts one may expect growing up in family and friendships. It took turns I did not expect and spoke to very powerful experiences. It made me reevaluate life, how I experience it, and how we affect each other. It was very cool.

If you like Undertale, this is a great game to check out. ONESHOT MY BELOVED IT IS SO GOOD AND SO UNDERRATED AAAA I really liked playing it because it manages to fit a lot of charm and a good story into a much shorter game than Undertale. Definitely worth at least one playthrough (tho there are multiple endings and they're worth checking out!!) And West of Loathing is a deceptively huge game with so much going for it. I haven't finished yet, but it's humorous and challenging and has so many secrets that I started to keep the wiki page up to learn about the alternate solutions I could have taken to solve different problems. THIS ^^^ It's almost like the game has two levels of complexity to it. You could play through the whole main storyline and miss this entire other part of the lore that's just as broad!! Won't spoil exactly what I mean by that, but its honestly very interesting because the game doesn't expect you to take it seriously, but it does reward those who choose to. Also just filled to the brim with wit and charm, not to mention the replay value.

I haven't played most of the games recommended here yet, but I've had my eye on both Oneshot and Bug Fables for a while now! They both seem really up my alley, and your description just makes that even more so!
I would like to second some of the other games here- Hollow Knight is a phenomenal game, and Salty has pretty much said it all but I want to add my own two cents LMAO. I've been playing the game for about probably 400hrs now (maybe more?) and I'm still having fun, both with an extra challenge mode and one of the post-game DLC (free!!) areas. There's a massive amount of content, and it's an absolute joy to play! The gameplay isn't for everyone, I know a good amount of people who just don't like metroidvania or for whom it was too difficult, but even then I would strongly recommend watching a playthrough! It's just that good! (Also, it's a got sequel coming up, Silksong! Most likely some time this year, but there's no official release date just yet).
My own personal aspect of it is the experience of getting lost in the world and then eventually finding your way again- after getting distracted at least 10 times by new things you find! - I don't have much to say that hasn't been already said about Unpacking and West of Loathing, but I have played (or, watched my housemate play with Unpacking) both of them and they are super fun games, especially if you're looking for a casual experience! You can put them down at pretty much any point and come back later, it's very easy to just play it in short bursts and doesn't detract from the experience at all imo!
- I started Rainworld... about a year ago, and haven't played since (oops), but that's in no way an indicator of the game's quality- I just suck at playing games! I'm still super early in, but it's already Gripped me... it's very fun gameplay wise, and the style is gorgeous!
Now for my own recs!! This is by no means a complete list, but for now: - OFF - An RPGMaker horror game, originally in french, but with an english translation. The general story is that you, the player, take control of a being called "The Batter" and guide him on his quest of travelling through the lands, defeating enemies, and purifying the world. It's not an overly long game (5-6 hours), but the plot develops in a really nice way, and the worldbuilding is very neat to learn about! There are a few twists and turns as well that add a lot to the experience. Also, it's free! (Content Warnings for: heavy themes of death (incl. an animal and child), violence/blood, bodyhorror, unsettling themes/unreality).
- We Know The Devil - A visual novel about being a teen, gay, and not fitting in at christian summer camp. There are three protagonists, and the only gameplay is choosing which two team up for the event at hand- and who gets left out. The writing, atmosphere, and characters are absolutely stellar, and it's a game that's really stuck with me for almost 4 years now. It's very short, only 45 minutes - 2 hours, depending on how thorough you are, but it creates a really strong experience in that short timeframe. (Content Warnings for: homophobia (mentioned), heavy religious/christian themes, mild bodyhorror).
- Machinarium - A sweet and simple point n' click game, about a little robot who has to rescue their captured girlfriend. It's a game without dialogue, and the visuals are really fun! The style really helps sell this robot city, and despite not being overly long (5-6 hours), it sets a nice atmosphere that drew me in. It also has a fun inbuilt minigame to get hints/a walkthrough if you are stuck on a puzzle. Very fun, very cute.
There's probably a lot more, but as always when asked about my favourite things my brain blanks hard LMAO. Will add onto this if I think of more, but for now I'll just be writing down everyone elses recommends :3

OH OH OH WAIT I THOUGHT OF A FEW MORE HOLDON these are both puzzle games!! i usually gravitate towards platformers and action games and whatnot but a nice n good puzzle game is sometimes exactly what you need <3 World Of Goo is a game that i originally played YEAAAAAARS ago, like before i actively even used the internet, and i replayed it somewhat recently and it's still EXACTLY as good as i remembered it (and actually even better because now i actually Get all the references and blatant criticism of capitalism the game's packed full of LMAO)!! it's got a super fun and creative approach to gameplay, and the puzzles are based around utilizing physics simulations to build (and sometimes destroy) various structures made from sentient(??) balls of slime of all sorts of different types, each with their own properties and specific characteristics. it's a very funny, charming and engaging game that is fully aware of just how weird and absurd it is and proudly embraces it, and there's a rlly good amount of levels to get through with a very decent amount of genuine challenge that has left me stumped multiple times!! Baba Is You is like. god. where do i even start. you Will get your brain scrambled so very thoroughly by this one. it's one of the best games ive ever played and i cannot possibly recommend it enough if you wanna test your problem solving skills!! the gameplay is basically like coding: you have blocks full of words and conditions, like Flag, Is, and Win. you move these blocks around by controlling a little white creature called Baba (which also makes the most delightful noises as it moves around. this game's sound design is SO good and scratches my brain in the best way possible), and you can move the blocks around to form the condition: Flag Is Win. when you touch the flag, if one is on screen, you win the level! that's just one example, but essentially the game is built around forming and breaking the very rules of the game itself to find increasingly more creative and unexpected solutions to each problem you're presented with. some of the later levels (which, admittedly, i solved most of by looking up step-by-step tutorials on youtube because i'd wrung my little peabrain dry trying to figure them out on my own lol) get absolutely insane to the point where i've sometimes just started laughing in hysteric awe after managing to wrangle the game into a particular solution that just COMPLETELY pulled the rug from under my feet. it's a very difficult game with a staggering amount of levels to get through, and the difficulty curve can get pretty darn steep (especially once the game starts introducing the real fancy variables like Not, Has, and Empty), but i still highly recommend checking it out if only for the absolutely delightful visuals and feel of the game!!

isn't it so cool to watch some piece of media you love grow from obscurity to having its own community? I've seen that happen a few times, with indie games or other content. I don't like going like.... 'oh I liked this before it was cool'. instead I'm more like. yes more people talk about my interests please. I wrote fanfics about this one piece of media which, four years later, became super popular and suddenly I was getting kudos and comments out the wazoo... it was nice to see them appreciated again!

First-- I trimmed your reply bc I don't want this post to be TOO massive, but please do tell me if you ever try Oneshot or Bug Fables! They're both stellar games (Oneshot is on the shorter side, if you're looking for something quick) and I can't recommend them highly enough.
Second-- I've heard a lot about OFF!! I remember it was really popular on Tumblr several years back. I always wanted to get around to trying it, but I kept forgetting... maybe now's the time to fix that, even though I'm 'late'. ALSO WKTD!!!!!! I actually just started playing that recently. I don't want to talk about spoilers, but the character writing and queer themes pleasantly surprised me and I loved it.
As for Machinarium, this sounds lovely! I'm putting this one on my wishlist as well :3
@nico-- NITW is amazing!!!! be gay do crimes. nightmare eyes. I love the bass playing sections and the minigames. I haven't revisited it in a little while, and my backlog of games to play is a bit long........ but I want to dive back into it sometime soon.
19-- Before Your Eyes looks great! something I really like about indie games is how unique they can be. I love the art style as well. A lot of indie games have a way of like, sticking w/ me, and I have a feeling this will be one of those game.s
@salty-- I HAVE played hollow knight and I loved it!! I'm going to be honest. I'm secretly not super good at video games so I remember having a little trouble with it. BUT it was so fun and atmospheric and I loved exploring the world! ALSO baba is you...... my friend has recommended this game very highly. I heard there was a major content update for it recently?
@penn-- YES oneshot is so good!! I wish more people knew about it, so I'm doing my part here!! I miss my baby Niko... did you have a favorite character? also fjsalfjslkfjfd I LOVE that fake dating sim so much.

I LOVE ONESHOT AHHHH its so good and sweet and i love its atmosphere so much ;___; I played the free version when it came out and played the steam version a couple years ago and theyre both an amazing experience !!! Also I second the recommendations for Night in the Woods, OFF, We Know The Devil, Hollow Knight, and Baba is You i love All those games Here are my own recs!
Heaven Will Be Mine - By the same team who made We Know The Devil, this game (or vn more specifically) acts as a thematic sequel to wktd, but you don't need to have played that to enjoy or understand this one. Where wktd deals with repressed gay teens, Heaven Will Be Mine instead focuses on Out young adult lesbians in their 20-30s navigating messy relationships, and is geared towards a more mature audience. You choose to play as one of three protagonists, each in a different faction of a war in space fought with giant mechs in a battle for humanity's future: Colonize space, return to Earth, or transcend humanity entirely. Throughout the game you make decisions based on whether your protagonist betrays their own faction and ditching their work to be gay and make out with a girl or to stay loyal and keep to your faction's interests, which culminate into multiple endings. Also one of the pairings in this game is divorcees and ex drama. Content warning for themes of homophobia + transphobia (very vaguely but it is There), and brief mentions of grooming and abuse. The game is only on steam atm, but wktd got a switch release pretty recently so I think that might happen for this game too sometime down the line. Probably not for a while though. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove - If you love platformers and indie games and classic pixely SNES games then Shovel Knight is like. the game ever. It's technically 5 whole games! The main campaign released in 2014, with 4 more campaigns being added slowly over time, and the game being fully completed just in 2019. The gameplay is extra fun and the style of the games are charming and nostalgic, and the pixel art all looks phenomenal. The main campaign, Shovel of Hope, follows the titular character Shovel Knight on a quest to save his friend and adventuring companion Shield Knight from the throes of the Evil Enchantress and her Quarter of No Order, a group of 8 knights that serve as the level bosses. The other 3 main campaigns, Plague of Shadows, Spectre of Torment, and King of Cards, feature 3 members of the Quarter of No Order as the protagonists of their own story, and each have wildly different gameplay elements and level design and reveal different facets of the main campaign's story. The campaign, Showdown, is a pvp game where you can play as any of the main characters featured in the series. It also includes a story mode for each character, revealing a bit more about the characters that didn't get their own campaign. All of these campaigns are in the complete edition Treasure Trove, but you can buy any of the campaigns separately/individually if you wish and play them in any order you'd like! I do recommend going in release order though if you want to play all of them. As a final note, I linked the game on the switch eshop but you can get the game on pretty much any console and steam, digital or physical! However the game was originally created for 3DS, and I do believe that its the best way to experience the game since it has the best resolution for the game's pixel art to really shine through, (plus a few gameplay features are easier on 3DS, as they were designed with dual screens in mind.) The only downside to getting the 3DS version above any other version is that the 3DS version of Treasure Trove does not include Showdown and you would have to buy that campaign individually on another console if you want to play it, but even so if you are able to get the 3DS version I think its worth it.
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon - Okay I know i just finished talking about shovel knight treasure trove which is like 5 games already BUT pocket dungeon is a spinoff game that's not a part of the main series! So it gives me an excuse to talk more about shovel knight :) but anyways. Pocket Dungeon is pretty new it released only like a month ago but I've had soooo much fun playing it. It's a fast-paced mix between a rougelite and puzzle game that has a chain-the-same-kind-of-thing-from-falling-blocks-to-clear-it-from-the-box type of gameplay but with the twist of the things you have to chain being various types of enemies from the shovel knight series with their own HP bar, and each take a different number of hits to defeat/clear. You as the player character also have an HP bar, and every time you hit an enemy, you take damage as well! You have to make sure to periodically chain potions (which also fall into the level along with enemies) to make sure you stay healed and don't die from hitting an enemy while your health is too low! And like any rougelite, you get currency when you beat enemies, which you can trade for items that have different boosts and effects per run !!! Also as you play you will unlock different playable characters (the main characters from the main series) and each has a different gimmick to how theyre controlled to spice up the gameplay and offer a ton of variety !!! It's so fun !!!! This game is seriously so addicting I love it so much. You absolutely do not need to play any of the treasure trove games to enjoy this one, while pocket dungeon Does have a light story in the background it's pretty divorced from anything that happens in the main games even though all the main characters are in it, so you could enjoy this game on its own with no problem. Plus its the kind of game you play more for the gameplay anyways. Pocket Dungeon is available on switch, steam, and PS4! Oxenfree - A neat sidescrolling adventure game that's also a ghost story. You play as Alex, a teenage girl on her way to a local island for a weekend trip with a group of friends plus her new stepbrother. Things Quickly Go Wrong. The gameplay consists of mostly walking around finding objects to progress the story, and occasionally tuning a plot-important radio to a specific frequency, and an interesting little dialogue system. Characters talk to you and amongst each other 90% of the time while you're walking around, and from there multiple dialogue options can pop up for you to respond to the conversation, but unless you're being spoken to specifically the conversations will still go on without you even if you don't pick any option. The options will fade away after several seconds if you don't pick any, so you could end up interjecting the conversation and cutting whoever's talking off or you could accidentally wait too long while listening to the other characters and lose your chance to speak up about something. It's not something that affects the story a huge amount other than endings where its important, but its neat. The story and characters are also very good, and I really like that it tells a compelling ghost story and builds a creepy atmosphere without relying on jumpscares. Content Warning for death of a family member. The game is available on pretty much every modern console. Gris - This game has got to be the prettiest game I've ever played. You could take a screenshot of any part of the game and it'll look like a gorgeous watercolour painting thats perfect for your desktop background or something. It's a platforming adventure game but the story is told entirely through visuals + gameplay + music, and features no dialogue. The specific story and its meaning is largely up to player interpretation, but generally speaking it serves as a metaphor for the stages of grief, portrayed through the use of colour and sound. The titular character Gris has to traverse around a world turned dead and greyscale and slowly bring it back to life, one colour at a time. There's not much else to say that wouldn't spoil more of the experience. It's a phenomenal game and I highly recommend it. It's available on switch, ps4, steam, and android for some reason.
Tangle Tower - A point-and-click mystery mystery adventure game that also has a handful of puzzles! It's apparently part of a series called Detective Grimoire? But I've only played this one game and had no idea it was part of a series so clearly you could play it on its own. Anyways you play as a duo of detectives trying to solve the murder of a girl who was apparently murdered by a painting. It's pretty short overall, but I'd recommend it still just for the style and aesthetic of the game. Is very colourful and fun, has some beautiful background art, a ton of fully animated character sprites in a unique cartoony style, and is fully voice acted ! Plus there are puzzles and puzzles are fun :) It has a very whimsical tone overall that just makes it a nice fun little time.
I had more on this list but it was getting pretty long so i cut it down a bunch LOL i love talking about gaem :)

I have remembered another game :)
Blasphemous: An action platformer game set in a world based around spanish christianity- and I swear it's cooler than this makes it sound LMAO, but it's hard for me to put into words very well. The aesthetic and worldbuilding of it is phenomenal, and the pixel art in it is gorgeous- here's some screenshots to show it: Art aside, the atmosphere of it is also incredible- it's one of the most tangible games I've ever played. It's certainly not an easy game, and the controls can feel a bit heavy at times, but I don't think that's to its detriment, on the contrary. One of my favourite things about it is the weight the main character has- his position in the world feels very solid at all times, your attacks actually have weight behind it, if an enemy hits you hard you go flying- it just feels very satisfying to play. I've played it with a friend, and even having played for hours, we still often commented on how good the weight and animations feel. Both the platforming and combat challenges are really fun, and although sometimes very hard, never to an extent where I've gotten frustrated with it. The world is also fairly open, with a few different places to go without a set order, so if you're stuck in a particular place, you can probably take a break to explore somewhere else, and come back later! There's also different shortcuts and fast-travel options avaiable relatively quickly, so the size of the map doesn't become annoying to traverse. As for combat, the enemies are all very interesting both in design and behaviour, and scale in a good way as you progress. The bosses are also really good- they're all challenging in their own way, and all have their own behaviours and tactics.
Now as for the general story, you play as the Penitent One, the sole survivor of his brotherhood, as he travels the world as a means to repent and make up for his sins- like I said, it's a very christianity game. Guilt, sin, sacrifice- those are the main themes of the game. It's fairly heavy in its story and visuals, so don't go into it expecting a happy story and ending, but it never felt grimdark or boring to me (and I generally give up on grimdark things very fast!). It's not a happy game, but it's a fun time, and if you enjoy a good challenge, very cool designs and art, and a bit of fucked up christianity aesthetic, this would be a game for you.
Content Warnings: blood/gore/violence, bodyhorror, death, strong religious themes, general themes of despair.

baba is you is SO superior god. also i got oneshot in a bundle and i've been meaning to play it augh... I will have to look into all of these i've like tangentially heard of many of them 0_0 my faves r: Death Trash!!! the love of my life. it's not done and it gets updates constantly but what i played Fucked. body horror desert apocalypse open world with rly cute pixel art. the world is cool and combat is fun but its also rly gross if ur not into Meaty vibes. its $20 but theres a free demo which i very recommend and also the price is worth it. Monster Prom (and Camp) :3 it's so fun it's so silly. u can date monsters! and there's a multiplayer mode which rules! the art is so good! it's a dating sim parody but it's not like a traditional visual novel, the stats work in cool ways and the playthroughs are relatively short, like 30 min - a couple hours depending on how many players. on ur turn basically u can pick a place in the school/camp to go to, which boosts certain stats depending on the place, which give u a better chance with different dateables, and also there's different randomized events n dialogues that happen at each place. gotta be one of my favorite games ever. The Yawhg... it's the same structure as monster prom but came out 5 years earlier and not a dating sim. u live in a little fantasy town that only has a few weeks before an impending doom (the yawhg) wipes it out, and based on where u go and what u do in those few weeks the ending changes. Dorfromantik :D it's just. placing little hex tiles to make a landscape. that's pretty much it. there's a game mode where u get a certain number of tiles and have to include certain things in ur landscape but there's also a free mode which isn't rly a Game but it's very relaxing Therapy With Dr. Albert Krueger (eyestrain/flashing warning for the website) >_< visual novel type thing where u go to fucked up therapy. it's super short. Invicta Vitae ^^ legally i gotta pitch this one cuz i helped make it. 2-player game where 1 of u is a human researcher trapped in a space lab and the other is a centipede monster attacking the person trapped in the space lab
