I was curious how much prior experience everyone has with forums!
As for me - despite having set up this forum - I admittedly have only ever used them sporadically. I'd use the ones on online pet sims (like Goatlings, or PFQ), and I've spent some time in the GaiaOnline forum (which really is an entire experience of its own)! I'd also usually stick to the art threads in there, and only use the forums to buy and trade art for virtual items LMAO.
Something fun I've done was run an "art school" thread on PFQ - I'd come up with short tutorials, with a few exercises stitched to the end, and people who participated could post the exercises they finished and get them reviewed with some constructive feedback. A copy of one of the "lessons" is (here); the MS Paint tutorial I wrote at the time was for that! I'd like to do something like that again some time, or at least, maybe rewrite that MS Paint tutorial now that it's been a while, but I think that's something for when the forums are open to everyone, so more people could join.
So, what about you! Have you used any forums before? Do you have any funny (or awful) stories to share? Feed them to me so that my power may yet grow!

This is going to make me sound like a huge Boomer, but before the days of skype/discord/etc. i was very into this internet game called Neopets, and i was very active on the forum for that, as well as playing forum based games/text adventures a lot in my youth, so I've had a lot of experience with forum-style socialization! I think i even still have profiles on the Serebii forum, and probably a few others from around 2010! I wonder how many others share my experience?

When I was about 12? maybe 13? years old, I found a german Star Wars forum, and since I was majorly into Starwars at the time, I joined it. Never was too active on it, but I did make a few buddies at the time, before we all migrated to Skype! Still have the drawings of one of them saved, since he always sent them to me for critiquing ^^' The most notable thing of the time is that I presented myself as a boy for internet safety reasons and then eventually it stuck, so I think forums transed my gender LMAO

I have never used forums ever. I knew they existed but I never had any reason to browse any because I wasn’t particularly invested in any sites that had a forum tied to it and any forums that I stumbled across that I’d have probably been interested in just intimidated me from the format. I was This close to joining a warriors cats forum at 10 but I was too afraid.

I loved Neopets and I was on the Neoboards a lot when I was young... since I was under 13, my parents had to mail in a signed form saying that I could use them (I hadn't learned how to lie about my age yet lmao). Later on I would join an offsite Neopets-based forum and I did a lot of roleplaying there for years and years. Eventually that group migrated to Skype, and I lost touch with a lot of them, but then I started using Discord as my primary means of keeping up with friends.
I also remember popping around on the court-records forums (an Ace Attorney fansite) and I lurked around on the Marilland forum (a Pokemon fansite, created by a youtuber with the same handle).

I'm a little older than you, but even though I was like, prime Neopets age back when Neopets was like, The Pet Site, interestingly enough I think back when I used it I was actually too young to really understand what a forum was...? Although, to be fair, I definitely had access to the internet and my own private computer well before I learned English, so that might have had a hand in that, haha. My mom was, and still is, an active Neopets user - part of the reason I got my own computer at all, since she didn't want her kid constantly borrowing hers when she was busy gaming herself. How IS the Neopets forum, though? Like... I just can't even begin to imagine. I also remember popping around on the court-records forums (an Ace Attorney fansite) and I lurked around on the Marilland forum (a Pokemon fansite, created by a youtuber with the same handle).
I have also been around on Court-Records, though, I'm not sure if I still have an account...? This was way back, and during a period they had a temporary forum because their regular forum's admin had their farm roof cave in because of heavy snowfall - or that's how I remember it, at least. Were you around when that happened? I also remember using Marilland, but just like, to look up Pokémon sprites hehe. I've never been in its forum! I've always been in like, the peripherals of forums KHKLHSSKLHSKFL like I tried to get into games like Neopets or GaiaOnline but I simply could not keep up with the forum format JAJDHHSFHK I'm hoping since this is a much smaller forum it'll be a good place to get used to it :D I'm very curious to find out how it is for you! Neopets and GaiaOnline aren't just big forums, they're probably like, the biggest forums that I know of, period. I've used the GaiaOnline forum before, and it feels very different from any other forum I've been on - both the way in which it really has it's own culture, but also the way in which it's just way to freaking big and spammy for moderation to keep anything but the worst in check. I'm obviously hoping the NIGHTFORUM is going to grow nice and big, but it reaching the size of Neopets or GaiaOnline would be the literal nightmare scenario.

So definitely a little young, and I wasn't able to use the forums until i was like 8 or 9, at which point they had become an absolute, utter mess! Neopets moderators were basically the worst moderators i've ever experienced, and kept getting stricter and stricter over the years, until in like 2014 i think there was a day where like. all of the neopets mods got fired or something, everyone was demodded, and things just became absolute chaos that essentially killed the forums for a while. I don't think it's really ever recovered. Mostly it was just a lot of kids on there, just being kids and trying to be edgy or whatever.

okay so im like very young which means i don't have "a lot" of forums experience but i was on the internet before i was supposed to be on the internet and the majority of this early experience was roleplaying warrior cats on the animal jam clans wiki. the rp happened more on animal jam than on the forums but we used the forums to collect and organise information about our clans and my clan was briefly the number one clan on the site because so many people visited the page. i also went around making small permission-granted grammatical corrections on other peoples clan pages and im not entirely sure why

I'm the kind of person who has to make sure every channel/thread is read though so itll be interesting to see if that'll get overwhelming in the future

Were you around when that happened? I also remember using Marilland, but just like, to look up Pokémon sprites hehe. I've never been in its forum! that is quite the event................ I don't remember that happening flkjsalfjd. I remember I spent a lot of time on the court-records forums reading posts in non-Ace Attorney related threads like "what is the weirdest encounter you had with a [girl/boy/other, fill in the blank]" and everyone went in blatantly lying to look cool. I also remember reading people's Ace Attorney fan stories (like where they made up their own characters and wrote out an AA game with them) and being impressed by the sprite work! It got me into trying pixel art for a bit.
Re: Marilland, I remember there were a lot of great Pokemon threads and I was on there for a while as a kid. I participated in a few roleplays, and I remember there was one site-famous roleplay which was 500+ pages long, each post being several hundred to several thousand words, and it had a lot of fan art and a big following. I tried to go back and read it a few years ago but for some reason the formatting had broken and some of the posts were missing. The tragic thing is that the roleplay kind of fell apart at the end and I don't think there was a real conclusion to the story :/

i was also on neopets starting from when i was 8, but i was...too young to use the neoboards haha. i think the only forum i ever really used extensively was pokefarm/PFQ's forums, and i used a few of the categories but especially trade forums, to set up trades and make money and stuff. i don't think i ever went on the art forums much actually but i should have used them more tbh... i think part of the reason i didnt was prolly cuz other than my pokesona i never really had OCs i was attached to until i was like 21...but if i had the energy for PFQ now i would be on that shit so much LMAO
