PLEASE READ NO HOME
No Home (집이 없어) is an ongoing slice of life/drama manhwa (with some supernatural elements sprinkled in) created by Wanan and published on Webtoon. The story focuses on a group of high schoolers of varying home circumstances living in the school dorms, and navigating life through their personal hardships. It started 6 years ago in 2018, but is nearing its completion. It updates every Monday, and also has an upcoming aeni* adaptation set to release later this year.

This comic really took me by surprise. I saw a short recommendation of it in passing and read it on a whim with no expectations, then it tore up my insides and left me to sweep up the ashes of my heart into a dustpan. This is genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever read and I’d be remiss Not to tell more people about it. It’s severely underrated in the Western Internet Sphere so I’m making it my mission to recommend this to everyone I know and the most efficient way to do this is to write a really long forum post on what it's about and why I like it so much. I also just need to type out and release my thoughts lest I go insane.
Very Brief Character Rundown
Haejoon Goh | Eunyung Baek | Juwan Park |
---|---|---|
- Really fucking cursed by the narrative. - autistic as hell. he likes to study :) | - Good at cooking+acting. Almost becomes a cryptobro at one point - soemth wrong with him. many things actually. like a lot of things | - lowkey the mvp of the comic but its not obvious at first - im like 85% sure he's bisexual and just really stupid about it |
Marie Kim | Hara Kang | Minju Gong |
---|---|---|
- runs a journalism club always on the hunt for good drama - Shes a lesbian i think. | - Judo champion. has a lot of fangirls - huge foodie and will inhale meals like a vacuum. i understand her | - runs a broadcasting club (to Marie's dismay) - very selfish and insensitive but still a nice person overall. |
Premise and Themes
Cast from left to right: Hara Kang, Juwan Park, Eunyung Baek, Haejoon Goh, Marie Kim, Minju Gong
The story follows several different characters, but the initial focus springs from the two main leads: Haejoon and Eunyung. After having an absolutely terrible first encounter with each other that leaves one in the hospital, the other without shelter, and both hating each other's guts, they soon find out afterwards that they are now forced to live with each other in an abandoned dormitory (that may or may not be haunted). This is the primary foundation of the story, and from there it spins out to gradually introduce the rest of the main cast and explore their lives and relationships with each other.
The Broad Focus
Broadly speaking, the focus of the story is that of family and home; what makes a place someone’s home, the ways in which someone’s home life shapes the way they live and respond to the world around them, and how they can grow beyond it. Because of the large cast of primary characters, the story is able to cover a wide variety of perspectives with each character’s background and family situations. It explores many different types of family dynamics that can range from supportive but dysfunctional, to outright abusive, and the specific difficulties of each. I would not really call it a family drama, but it is a drama about family if that makes sense. I’d easily recommend this to enjoyers of that genre though, as it hits and examines many of the same beats. Some other themes it touches beyond the scope of home and family include the responsibility adults have towards children, how connections formed with others can be forged and broken, the path of healing from trauma, as well as the nonlinear nature of growth and self improvement. Also there’s ghosts. The Narrow Focus
The supporting cast gets their time to shine and are all fantastic in their own right, but ultimately the core of the story lies with the 2 main characters, Haejoon and Eunyung. Their relationship and how it develops is, to me, the main appeal of the manhwa. These two have such a rich dynamic that gets more layered and complex as the story goes on and it's absolutely fascinating to see unfold. The intersection of their personalities and values and how they touch on the broader themes of the story is really cool to see. I struggle to even put a name to whatever the fuck it is they have going on, it’s not romantic it’s not platonic it’s not even familial it’s like some secret fucked up fourth thing that’s impossible to describe deftly. Watching the dynamic between them slowly develop is truly the meat of the story as well as watching the people they become individually through the other’s influence, for better or worse.
Why No Home Fucks Like Hell
Writing: First and Definitely Foremost, the character writing in this comic is fantastic. Every single character is fleshed out and multi-dimensional, even the less important side characters. You get to see different sides of the main cast as the story goes on that betray your first impressions of them but at the same time never contradict or change the parts you’re familiar with. Some of the plot beats are pretty mundane, but the characters are given such a great amount of interiority that everything still manages to feel very engaging through it all. And because of that, it makes the conflicts between characters really dynamic and SO compelling to read. They clash together in understandable ways and can’t always breach the barrier of communication to reach each other despite their best efforts. Wanan is truly a master at writing conflict and building tension through even just simple lines of dialogue; the push and pull of the characters against each other is just really well done and rooted in a very strong understanding of what makes them click.
Pacing: As of writing, No Home is 250+ chapters and counting. It’s quite long, and due to the length it's definitely a slow burn but one that doesn't ever feel like a slog to read through. The story takes its time setting up the relationships and conflicts and isn’t afraid to play a long game with some of its subplots. It has great buildup and feels very rewarding to read through; the emotional payoffs are so satisfying and cathartic.
Humor: I’ve neglected to mention it in the midst of talking about how good the drama and conflict is but this is extremely important. This manhwa is funny as fuck. It has a good deal of comedy to balance out the harsher aspects of the story, and it's all the better for it. It reminds me a bit of Mob Psycho 100 in this aspect, it has a similar blend of lighthearted comedy and serious heartfelt drama and it never feels like one aspect is detracting from the other. Some goofy ass shit will happen at the same time a character has Really Deep Introspection going on. One of the most heartfelt moments in the story happens while the main character is wearing a cow costume. This comic is as silly as it is gut-wrenching and it’s Great.
Art: The art style is simple but Very effective at getting across what it needs to. Since the settings are really important to depict throughout the series Wanan is smart to use 3D models for the backgrounds very liberally to not absolutely wreck their hands lmao. I respect it. The artistic focus is instead directed into character expression and atmosphere, and it does a hell of a good job doing it. Wanan uses some really neat visual techniques to highlight the emotions and mental states of the characters; it has range and is really charming. By far my favorite aspect of the art is the various gimmicks for the chapter titles. The beginning of most chapters have a little illustration to go along with it, and associate the main characters with different patterns or abstractions. Wanan likes to use these patterns in different ways artistically to show symbolic representations of what happens to the characters in a chapter. It’s a simple but neat little tidbit that I haven’t really seen done very often before, but I enjoy it a lot.
Wait Len Did You Say This Was Going To Have An Animated Adaptation
Small note- You can watch the Actual announcement video for the aeni here, but it’s like. Very short
