a couple days ago i thought really hard about a particular place in one of my favorite games so much that i actually started tearing up about it, and then i thought, hey! other people ~~probably~~ definitely have places like that that make them feel a similar amount of Emotion too! so, my question is - what are some of your favorite locations in video games you've played(/watched lets plays of)? what sorts of places in fictional game worlds make you feel at peace, or you like to visit just for the fun of it, or are otherwise super memorable for one reason or another?

i'll share a few of mine as examples!

first, there's the City of Tears from Hollow Knight. it's… ok where do i even start lmao it's SUCH a gorgeous location to me for a great number of reasons including but not limited to its visual look, its atmosphere, its lore and its music. it's actually the place that inspired this whole post in the first place! it might just be my all-time favorite videogame location, actually - the buildup to it in the game's progression is fantastic, and all of the lore surrounding its construction and history and even its current state in the game's story is just mesmerizing in a way i don't have the words to describe. it makes me actually kinda weepy whenever i think about it for too long (and every single time i listen to its theme song), it just means That much to me. hands down my favorite place in the game to visit!

another favorite is the Luma Pools area from Ori and the Will of the Wisps! i haven't actually played the game myself due to console limitations but i have watched a few lets plays, and picking a single favorite location from this one was pretty difficult due to just the sheer amount of gorgeously designed areas in it - eventually i settled on the Luma Pools though, because water-themed places tend to be my favorites by default and the Pools are a refreshingly unique take on em in terms of colors too! also the music is wonderful and i'm obligated to mention it every time LMAO

Some of my favorites, in no particular order, and by far not exhaustive:

Fun Land in Hamtaro Ham Ham Heartbreak
Genuinely, I just really like this game for nostalgic reasons and I loved exploring all the locations in it, with a special shoutout to Sandy Bay (it's a beach, it's got fun music) and Boo Manor (haunted house). But out of all of the locations, Fun Land was my favorite because it was a theme park, so even after completing all the story stuff in that place, I'd sporadically just come back there to ride on all the attractions and play the minigames and buy popcorn and stuff. I just loved that place. It was fun!
The Underground in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl
I spent HOURS in there, digging up stuff and setting up extremely elaborate traps for my friends that would blast them to the other side of the map if they tried to enter my secret base. The underground in BD/SP doesn't compare, mostly because it was all about actually decorating your secret base and playing in local multiplayer with friends, neither of which is really much of a feature in those games. I wouldn't say the underground was really pretty or all that interesting, it mostly just scratched my brain in a very specific and satisfying way I guess.
The Entire World Of Okami
I know it's sort of cheap to just list the entire game but like. Listen. Okami was so much fun. It's genuinely one of my favorite games I've ever played, and I felt so much joy doing anything in there just exploring and running around because everything was so pretty and you play as a wolf and I was really immersed in the experience of being a wolf I guess. Visually it's one of the most beautiful games out there, and experience-wise you are roleplaying as a wolf and it's so cool and you can piss on enemies as a taunt. It's so fucking cool Salty you should play Okami you would love it so much.
Destiny Islands from Kingdom Hearts
This is the first world you play in in the Kingdom Hearts series (assuming you start at KH1), and so it's the first place you are before all the weird shit in the KH series goes down. Kind of like the calm before the storm I guess? So I've spent literal hours just hanging out there before actually getting into the game, just because I really enjoyed the sense of peace that place had. It's, like the name implies, a tropical island with vivid colors and a beach and some friends and I just like it a lot. :)

This might be a bit of a cheat, but literally every single area in Gris. Literally all of it. Gris is the most gorgeous game I've EVER played, every area looks like a still out of a watercolour painting and is beautiful and meaningful in its own way. I could not Possibly pick just one out of it.

For a more selective answer though, the amusement park from NieR:Automata and the abandoned factory also from automata. I love the hazy atmosphere in the amusement park and how everything is kinda tinted purpleish, and paired with the music it feels so whimsical and alive but in an oddly haunting way. The dynamic nature of the music really adds to it too, like how it gets more dynamic as you get closer to the main area where all the npcs are celebrating and having a parade, and it gets more chill and the lyrics disappear in the small alleyways and emptier areas.

The abandoned factory i like particularly after you beat a certain section of the game, keeping it vague to avoid spoilers but some really Action Packed Wack Fucked Up Shit happens in the factory near the end of the first route of the game, and coming back to that area once the chaos dies down is soooo so so eerie and chilling. The lights are all off, enemy encounters are there but few and far between, the whole space feels so EMPTY and the music that plays while you explore this cold dead area really drives it home. (Here's a link its the only video i could find that has the exact version that plays in this scenario) I think the context of what happens prior and everything leading up to the area becoming Like That is a core part of why it stuck with me. There's no story related reason to come back to that area after that point and the only thing you can gain are collectibles and hidden weapons, but returning there just feels so uncomfortable and wrong because of the atmosphere surrounding it.
