People keep saying to never judge a book by its cover, but actually these people are wrong and liars, so let's do exactly that!
Guess what the book the person above posted is about based on its cover! That's it, that's the game. If you know what the book actually is about, try to let someone else answer so the view can be as unbiased as possible! Also I'm not just talking abt "classic" books here, graphic novels, comics, mangas, hell even webcomics and all that other stuff are fair game. Have fun with it! And hey, maybe we can also use this thread as a sort of rec list as well, where we explain what the book is actually about after the person guessed!
Since I'm the one starting the thread, I'll go first wiiiith [drumrolls]
The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag (which I actually found out is a trilogy while looking this cover up! Had no idea so that's cool) Now it's your turn, judge this book by its cover!

Okay so there's a boy, who wants to be a witch, but isn't one. Maybe he has a distant relation to a witch and wants to follow in their footsteps but is discouraged from it because being a witch is frowned upon or something. But he wants to be a witch real bad so he starts attempting to do witch stuff and magic in secret. Then by complete accident he summons a wolf familiar that loves him a lot and helps him with witch stuff more and he's like "aw sick i have a new friend" and the story makes you think the wolf is secretly evil and that the witch boy will have to grapple with having summoned a dangerous entity but the wolf is actually just a friend and is chill. but unfortunately very big and hard to hide so that's a problem for the witch boy who doesnt want people to know hes engaging in witch activities and summoned a very dangerous looking dog that CAN kill you but won't because he's nice actually. This problem is solved by the wolf friend being able to turn into shadow and chills in the witch boy's shadow to avoid being seen by people. the witch boy is like "oh cool that's convenient :)" but it's actually revealed later on that the wolf familiar is actually a part of his soul because a long time ago Everyone in his ancestry were witches but then witch hunts happened or something but they didn't want to get killed off so they used some sort of fucked up magic to separate the part of themselves that can do magic (something something magic is an extension of the soul) and gave them physical animal forms and made them separate entities. So they could not do magic anymore and thought they were safe but that was not a very smart or well thought out idea because they just hunted the familiars that Could do magic instead, making the ex-witches forever apathetic and lethargic because they lost half of their soul or something. and in a panic One of the survivors had their Animal Familiar Companion Soul Thing take a deep sleep and take up an incorporeal form until the world is Safe again and no one hunts witches anymore. So that one guy kept his sanity + sense of self because his familiar was still out there somewhere. And the familiar kept attaching itself to that one survivor's descendants in hopes of one of them taking up magic again as a signal for it to return which didn't happen until the titular witch boy attempted magic, and none of his family and ancestors before that did that because they had no reason to. i dont know where the story goes after that revelation maybe he has to convince people that Magic Not Bad and also he's confused about what the hell to do with that information.
how'd i do. i kind of panicked and didnt know where to stop. also here's the next book to judge: Pandemonium by Chris Wooding and Cassandra Diaz (which was supposed to get a sequel but never did and im forever upset about it.) i could not find a higher quality image than this one

You got pretty close to the actual story of the book in the beginning! The story follows in a family of magically inclined people. Women become witches, and men become shapeshifters. However our main character, the titular witch boy, doesn't want to be a shapeshifter and hasn't been able to shapeshift once, and instead he wants to be a witch. However all of his family tells him it is impossible due to the fact have only been women in his family. However one day the boys of the family start to diseappear because of an unkwown wolf spirit, and it looks like he's the only one able to get to the bottom of the case. The whole book is basically a commentary on gender roles and toxic masculinity using a magic system to convey its message! I liked it a lot, it was quite nice.
I'm gonna let someone else try to guess what the book is about so it's not just a back and forth though :3c
